A Kid Like Jake by Daniel Pearle
Directed by Bob Carter
Doing the right thing. How do you get it right?
Alex and Greg are navigating the always elusive question, “What is the best thing for our child?” In the treacherous waters of elite Manhattan private school applications, a friend suggests that four-year-old Jake’s gender expansive playing habits (i.e. playing princesses) might work in their favor as a “diversity-pull”. What? At what cost?
Should Alex and Greg label their child before sending them off to kindergarten? Can they accept & uplift their child for who they are while walking the tightrope of Manhattanite Mommy expectations?
When a new pregnancy stirs hope and fear of another miscarriage. How do relationships and family survive?
A Kid Like Jake posits these questions and more. Daniel Pearle’s insightful piece about parenting through transitions may expand our thinking of what it means to accept our children for who they are, and the ways in which we can get things wrong, even while doing everything right.
